Smart asset management for a smart world. Thanks to the emergence of IoT, a city or organization’s mobile and stationary assets can now be managed and monitored remotely, turning them into smart assets.

Track anything, anytime, anywhere

The web, analytics and wireless/IoT solutions are now being combined to provide anytime, anywhere control and monitoring, offering useful insights and intelligence. Sensors can be attached to anything – motors, generators, pumps, gates, streetlights, even farm animals – and those assets can be monitored, tracked, and in many cases controlled remotely.

Smart asset management systems can analyze reams of data and distil it into trends, performance statistics, energy usage and lifetime/maintenance predictions. Real-time alerts are now possible because the assets can be monitored 24/7, cutting down on equipment burnout and the resulting knock-on effects.

The smart city

Smart asset management is a key component of the smart city. By integrating smart, connected technologies into transportation, energy use, waste management and infrastructure, the smart city aims to be more livable, efficient, sustainable and responsive for its residents. Two examples are streetlights and parking.

  • Smart streetlights. By integrating a smart controller into a streetlight, the light’s on/off schedules can be managed more accurately and it can be dimmed when there are no people around, reducing energy usage and light pollution. In addition, it can communicate its status to the streetlight department removing the need for night patrols.
  • Smart parking. By installing cameras or sensors in parking spaces, parking availability can easily be monitored. An intelligent parking system can leverage this information to optimize parking space usage, reduce search time, and improve traffic flow, all while offering drivers a more convenient and efficient parking experience.

Agriculture and industrial IoT

Smart asset management is becoming a key technology in agriculture. Sensors, GPS trackers and IoT are being used to monitor, track, and optimize the utilization of agricultural assets such as machinery, equipment, livestock, and land. It is helping farmers and agribusinesses improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance productivity.

Similarly, in the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) smart asset management with connected devices, sensors, AI, and data analytics is being used to monitor, track, and optimize industrial assets such as machinery, equipment, and infrastructure in real time. It enables predictive maintenance, efficiency improvements, and cost reductions in industries like manufacturing, energy, transportation, and logistics.
